Planning a group activity, no matter the event, is stressful. We totally get that. And if you’re the person saddled with ensuring everyone in your crew, with all their individual interests and preferences, has a good time, don’t panic. Two words for you: axe throwing. We’ll help you literally hit the bullseye on event planning by reserving axe throwing at The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring.
Axe throwing works best for adult groups of 6 to 25. Of course, the right planning depends on who’s coming. A 40th birthday, a bachelorette weekend, and a sales team that’s tired of seeing each other in little video boxes all want different things from an afternoon with sharp objects. So here’s how we’d set up each one, with real numbers, because “contact us for pricing” has never helped anyone plan anything.

Is Axe Throwing a Good Group Activity?
It might be the best one. Nobody has to be good at it, and that’s the magic. Beginners are sticking axes within a few throws, which means the person who hasn’t thrown anything heavier than a frisbee since 2009 has a real shot at taking down the coworker who won’t stop talking about their arm.
The math that matters is lanes. Each lane holds up to six throwers, and we have four, so 24 people can throw at once. Here’s how that plays out:
- 1 to 6 people: one lane. Cozy, loud, a little cutthroat.
- 7 to 12 people: two lanes. The sweet spot for most parties.
- 13 to 25 people: all four lanes, which is our large party setup.
- 25 and up: split the crew. Half climbs while half throws, then swap. Give us a call and we’ll sketch it out.
Throwers need to be 10 or older, and every party package comes with a dedicated staff member who’s part coach, part referee, part hype person. The sport even has a governing body, the World Axe Throwing League, formed in 2017, with rules that cover safety and staff training. Our version is simpler: one coach per party, there to keep everyone safe and everybody honest.

Axe Throwing Birthday Parties
Adult birthdays are the easiest event to plan because the guest of honor already knows exactly who’s showing up and who’s going to talk trash. We run two axe-throwing birthday parties, both two hours long:
- Small party, 6 to 12 throwers, $236: two lanes, four reserved tables, a private fire pit, and a coach.
- Large party, up to 25 throwers, $472: four lanes, eight reserved tables, two private fire pits, and a coach.
Both come with the option to run a tournament, and the projected targets do the heavy lifting on games: Battleship, Connect Four, Zombie Hunt, and more. Nobody has to keep score on a napkin, and nobody gets to argue about it later. The computer saw everything.
Food is the easy part. Bring your own spread, whether that’s cake, tacos, or a full tailgate setup. Prefer someone else to handle it? The Munch Mobile food truck takes group pre-orders with 72 hours’ notice. One thing to know up front: there’s no alcohol anywhere on the property. Save the toast for the bar after, or the restaurant of your choice.

Bachelor and Bachelorette Party Axe Throwing
Groups of 8 to 14 are the sweet spot. That’s big enough for a legitimate tournament and small enough that the guest of honor can be heckled personally. Two lanes comfortably cover 12, and at 13 or 14 you’ll want to step up to the larger setup.
Axes alone make a great hour or two. But we’re also a zipline and ropes course park (the largest aerial forest park in the country!), so the real power move is a half-day combo. The axe throwing + zipline bundle takes 25% off your throwing session when you book it with climbing tickets, and there are three ways to run it:
- Climb, then throw. Book your lane 3.5 to 4 hours after your climbing start time. The climb is three hours, plus 40 minutes of gear-up and briefing up front, so give yourselves room to breathe.
- Throw, then climb. Burn off the pre-party nerves with axes first, then head up into the trees.
- Split the group. Half climbs, half throws, and everybody swaps. Perfect when two or three people would rather keep their feet on the ground.
What to bring: closed-toe shoes (no sandals, no flip-flops), athletic clothes, and if you have long hair, something to tie your hair back. Phones and loose items go in a locker. If you’re climbing, the weight limit is 265 pounds. Waivers are completed online each calendar year, and printed ones aren’t accepted, so send the link to the group early. Nobody wants to be filling out forms on a phone in the parking lot while the rest of the party stands around.
Group reservations need at least two weeks’ notice, and slots go first come, first served. Book before the bridesmaids start debating dates.

Corporate Axe Throwing and Team Building
Most team-building events fail for the same reason: everyone can tell they’re being managed. Nobody has ever bonded over an ice breaker in a conference room. Axe throwing skips all of that. People get a goal, a little friendly competition, and something to laugh about on Monday.
Three formats work well:
- Tournament bracket. Pair people across departments, run it on the digital targets, and let the coach referee. Bragging rights are surprisingly motivating.
- Coached instruction. A shorter session for teams that want to learn together, no scoreboard required.
- Throw plus climb. Our corporate team-building events can pair the lanes with the aerial courses. Group climbing rates start at 10 people, and the climb comes with picnic tables for the day plus an extra hour afterward to eat and regroup.
Here’s a sample two-hour agenda for 12 people on two lanes:
| Time | What happens |
| Before the day | Waivers done online, headcount estimate sent, food pre-ordered |
| 0:00 to 0:15 | Arrive, meet your coach, warm-up throws |
| 0:15 to 1:15 | Bracket tournament, rotating partners each round |
| 1:15 to 2:00 | Finals, fire pit, lunch from the Munch Mobile or your own spread |
Logistics, since someone in accounting will ask: a $150 non-refundable deposit holds your date, and the balance is due two weeks before you arrive. You can cancel for any reason until 5 pm the day before. We don’t offer refunds, but a timely cancellation or weather closure can be rescheduled or turned into a gift card that never expires.

Axe Throwing Leagues and Casual Adult Play
If you’re after a weekly league or a drop-in bar night, we’re probably not your spot, and we’d rather tell you that now. Our lanes are booked by the hour through the reservation page, and we don’t list a league. What we do have is the tournament option in every party package, which scratches the competitive itch for one very fun afternoon. For an ongoing league, look at indoor venues near you. Our guide to axe throwing near Washington, D.C. covers several.

Backyard Axe Throwing: Should You?
Short answer: please don’t. A sharpened axe in a backyard is a bad plan. Standard safety guidance calls for taping off the target area, keeping spectators out of the zone behind the target, and having first aid on hand, and very few backyards can manage all of that (or the neighbors). Plastic or foam sets are great for kids. For real axes, come to a lane with a coach and a target built for the job. You’ll leave your own axes at home too, since we provide the throwing gear.

How Much Does an Axe-Throwing Event Cost?
Here are our current price bands, as of October 2026. The per-person figures are our own math from the lane prices.
| Setup | Group size | Length | Price | Per person |
| One lane, hourly | 1 to 6 | 1 hour | $59 | about $10 to $59 |
| Small party | 6 to 12 | 2 hours | $236 | about $20 to $39 |
| Large party | 13 to 25 | 2 hours | $472 | about $19 to $36 |
Adding the climb? Adult daytime climbing tickets are $69, before taxes and fees, and the bundle takes 25% off your throwing session. Group climbing rates for 10 or more aren’t posted, so call (240) 623-2435 for a quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many people can throw axes at once? Twenty-four, with six per lane across four lanes. Our large party package covers up to 25 throwers.
How long does an axe-throwing party last? Two hours for party packages. Hourly lane rentals run one or two hours. Add roughly three hours forty minutes if you’re pairing it with the climb.
Can we bring our own food? Yes, bring a spread. The Munch Mobile food truck is also on site, and groups pre-order 72 hours ahead. No alcohol is allowed on the property.
Is axe throwing safe for a corporate group? Every party comes with a dedicated coach and closed-toe shoes are required. Park rules also bar anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Any sport involving sharp edges carries some risk, which is why the coach is part of every party.
What’s included in the price? Lanes, throwing axes, projected game targets, reserved tables, private fire pit(s), and your coach. Food and climbing tickets are separate.
